Co-founded in 1999 by Eric Bunge, FAIA, and Mimi Hoang, AIA, nARCHITECTS (registered in New York) gained international attention in 2004 with Canopy at MoMA/PS1, and soon after with Switch Building and Gallery in Manhattan. Since these early projects, nA has continued to engage with critical issues that are transforming cultural spaces, civic buildings and housing.
Projects on the boards include the net zero Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center, the Made in NY Campus for the garment industry, a farmers market, three public park pavilions and a transformation of a grain elevator in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, a co-living building in Miami, and two private homes in upstate NY. One focus of the practice is experimentation in CLT (cross-laminated timber) construction for single-family homes, to further the potential of this innovative material as a sustainable alternative to steel and concrete.
One of the hallmarks of nARCHITECTS work is their ability to balance an iconic presence with a nuanced sensitivity to physical and cultural contexts. They aim to appropriately scale and connect projects to their immediate context, and strive to design beautiful homes that accommodate the richness and flux of domestic life.
A certified woman-owned and minority-owned business, the nARCHITECTS team works collaboratively with the spirit of an atelier and the organization of an office. Led by Montreal native, Eric Bunge, and Mimi Hoang, who was born in Vietnam, the team also includes members from Hong Kong, Australia, Spain, Florida, Arizona, Idaho, Ohio, Detroit, Pennsylvania and Seattle. This unique mix of geographic and cultural backgrounds helps nA to interpret the range of contexts and cultures that shape their projects.
nARCHITECTS has been listed in the top 10 firms in design in the US by Architect Magazine five times in the last six years. National and international recognition includes an American Academy of Arts and Letters in Architecture Award, the AIA New York State Firm of the Year Award, an AIA National Institute Honor Award, AIA NY Design Honor and Merit Awards, The Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices, and the Canadian Professional Rome Prize.
