9 CARRAIG RIDGE

Wandering Stones House is a collaborative project by BOLD Workshop Architecture and XYC Design Corp., taking inspiration from the ancient glaciers that shaped the area and deposited rocks and boulders as they traveled through the landscape. Consisting of three closely related volumes, the home’s forms mimic geological deposits along the slope of the hill – materials brought from far away that weather and grow with the topography until they seem they were always meant to be there.

The three volumes consist of a main bedroom suite, an open living and dining area, and detached garage with studio space. The main bedroom, separated from the living spaces by the ‘link’ – a windowed corridor that integrates a home office space – offers a ‘home within a home’ to allow the owners to comfortably host guests for weekend retreats while maintaining everyone’s sense of privacy.

Carved into the simple forms are rectangular cutouts, creating moments of transparency, entry and shelter around the perimeter. Glazing along the living and dining areas is pulled inward to create an outdoor patio within the volume that is protected from the prevailing winds, while offsetting the bedroom suite creates pockets of shelter between the main structures. A unifying ridgeline zigs across the volumes, leaping over the recessed link as it runs across the living area and suite before taking a 90-degree turn to meet the garage, giving each volume an identifying shape while connecting them visually.
